Portable Dehumidifiers

Efficiency in Small Packages

The best way to control the growth of molds in homes is to control the moisture present inside, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The recurrent problem of molds is one of the most compelling reasons to get a dehumidifier. This machine, which can come in portable sizes, can provide protection to walls, furniture, building foundations, electronics, and even the strings inside a piano.

A dehumidifier operates on the same principle as air conditioners: control the temperature of the air; and in doing so, control moisture. Cold air has les humidity than hot or warm air. A dehumidifier can extract the air replete with moisture from inside the room, cool it let the condensation fall into its built-in reservoir for water, warm it according to your room temperature, and release it.

The dehumidifier’s capacity to remove moisture from a room is dependent on the size of the fan and the power of the fan’s motor. Smaller rooms can use a dehumidifier with blade-type fans. Large rooms, on the other hand, may be best served by dehumidifiers with fans that are similar to the ones used in furnaces, the squirrel cage-type fans.

However, portable units may have a lot of disadvantages that larger types don’t have. First of all, and perhaps the most important: portable dehumidifiers consume less electricity. Sometimes, the energy consumption of a portable unit is only half of a large dehumidifier. This will definitely have an impact your electric bill. Secondly, their movement is not restricted by their bulk. You can move a portable unit, which can only weigh 29 pounds, to every room in the house that needs it.

Finally, and equally important, portable units are almost as efficient as the larger models. On the average, the capacity of air dehumidification measured in square feet and the size of its indoor reservoir are as high as in some of the full-sized machines.

However, a portable can also have its disadvantages. The components are more tightly packed inside the unit, and this may cause frost in the compressor and to the other parts inside. To counter this problem, some manufacturers have added a warning light to inform the user that the compressor needs to be rid of the accumulated frost.

Portable dehumidifiers are more convenient than full-sized machines, especially for a home that is on a tight budget. Just remember to pay attention to all of the warnings and instructions that are in the operations manual and your home will be conveniently mold-free.
